Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary lies 5km outside the village of McGregor, a comfortable 1½ hours’ drive from Cape Town. Here the visitor can have a safe and relaxing experience in rural surroundings.
Come and enjoy open air, tranquility and the magic of meeting our 28 happy rescued donkeys. Our trained guides will tell you the story of each one and inform you about the needs of these gentle, so often misunderstood animals.
Admission is by donation. You may be seduced into adopting a donkey for yourself or as a gift for a loved one, at any level of support that suits your pocket. A personalised adoption certificate, photo, history and regular reports are issued.
Relax in our Coffee Shop, browse through our wonderful selection of books on sale, buy a memento in our Donkey Shop and sip or take home our unique Eseltjiesrus wines or local craft beer. Enjoy quiet spots to birdwatch, stroll around our dam and just find peace in your heart.
Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary encapsulates its ethos in the words: “A Culture of Caring” – “Ons gee om”.
The Sanctuary is wheel-chair friendly and child-friendly and pets are welcomed on leads. Please book in advance for groups bigger than five people.
